Contracts signed and sealed for Health on the High Street

City of Doncaster Council and Rotherham, Doncaster and South Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) have officially signed the contracts that will see a new health hub arriving in the city centre.

Under an initiative known nationally as “Health on the High Street,” the commitment means that the health trust will be opening a new hub in the Waterdale area of the city centre, in the former St Modwen building.

The commitment made by RDaSH will mean that plans can now be put in place for the transformation of the building – which will have a clear focus on children and young people’s mental health – with a timeline for works able to be prepared.

This contract is the next in a series of plans for the Waterdale area of the city centre – with long-term plans being put in place to further regenerate the area and connect it to the rest of the city centre as part of Mayor Ros Jones’ city centre masterplan.

Mayor Ros Jones said: “I am delighted that the contracts for the Health on the High Street initiative in Doncaster have now been finalised, and we can all now look forward to seeing NHS services delivered in our city centre. I want to thank our partners at RDaSH for committing to this project and providing a service that will be welcomed by many across the City of Doncaster, especially young people who will now have even greater support for their mental and emotional health.

“This project continues our plan to regenerate the Waterdale area of the city centre, which is in much need of redevelopment. It is time to change that. I am happy that the former St Modwen building will be the first to be brought back to life as part of proposals to regenerate the area and we will have further announcements in the coming weeks and months.”

Toby Lewis, Chief Executive of RDaSH, said: “The Council has ambitious regeneration plans for the city centre, and we are excited that health care is a key part of that transformation. We will work with other health bodies to make sure that the Waterdale development is ready in 2027 and improves access to care in the city.

“Neighbourhood health provision matters to reduce barriers to using services, and perhaps especially for young people we know that ease of access is critical, and the consequences of delay are significant. The Trust is excited to be expanding our services in Doncaster, building on having the shortest waiting times for mental healthcare in the NHS.”

The Health on the High Street initiative is part of the Government’s 10-year health plan for England, which focuses on collaborative working between local authorities and the NHS and the creation of neighbourhood health services.
