Doncaster entrepreneur encourages budding business owners to sign up to free course

A Doncaster entrepreneur is encouraging budding business owners to attend the Rebel Business School when it returns online for local residents in June.

Rebecca Wright set up her business Pub Painting UK in December 2019 and made the decision to attend the course, previously known as the Pop-Up Business School, in March 2020 just before the Covid-19 pandemic swept across the country.

She said: “I had previously owned my own art business but I wanted some more hints and tips to feel more confident.

“So many courses focus on sitting down and writing business plans but this one was different. It was very motivating and it made me feel confident to just go for it.”

The free ten-day course features daily online workshops from leading business professionals to teach you about areas such as starting up, marketing and building websites – something which Rebecca found particularly helpful.

“The website I use now was built during the course and it has been extremely useful to promote my artwork during the pandemic.

“I have had over 100 contact forms filled out for painting commissions as I have been unable to do pub painting.”

Pub Painting UK provides art classes in pubs to encourage any adult to paint, whether they are total beginners or advanced artists.

As a skilled artist herself, Rebecca chooses a theme at each event and guides the class to produce a painting step-by-step.

She held her first event in February 2020 and then attended the Rebel Business School before having to put her business on hold in March.

“We completed the last few days of the course online and I had to stop running events.

“I tried to start it up again when we were able to last year but thought it was best to pause it and wait until when everything opens.

“I received the discretionary grant from Business Doncaster too which was helpful.”

With more hospitality venues opening up, Rebecca is optimistic about the future of her business.

“I still have confidence that it will work. There is loads of interest already.

“I’m looking to expand to different towns and potentially hire new artists in the future.”

She says that she still uses many hints and tips that she picked up from the Rebel Business School to keep her motivated.

“One piece of very useful advice from the course sticks with me today. You need to eat the frog.

“This means that if you’ve got something you are putting off - just get it done.

“If you have an idea but have no idea how to start a business - attend this course. It will give you the foundations to start and it is so easy to attend.”
