Doncaster Sheffield Airport makes significant radar investment

The airport has appointed Raytheon UK, a leading air traffic management and digital transformation specialist, to provide and install the radar system at the site. The radar system will be delivered in 2027 and help to provide the latest technology that will place DSA at the forefront of aviation technology.  Raytheon is an RTX business. 

Investing in this innovative equipment is the next step in ensuring the airport is at the cutting edge of the industry and represents the largest capital cost in the project’s pre-start phase. The team at DSA have placed the order in an environment when there are increased global demands for these types of systems, as a direct result of international military tensions.

The modern radar system provided by market leader RTX, which supplies Air Traffic Management Systems to customers in 45 countries around the world, uses high resolution systems to mitigate potential interference caused by wind farms.

The radar represents a next-generation system as compared to equipment that was used when the airport was formerly open prior to 2022 and reduces the airport’s reliability on radars operated by third parties.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is currently undergoing an Airspace Change Process, with public consultation on that process due to commence this summer ahead of freight flights in 2027 and scheduled passenger flights in 2028.

The airport currently employs more than 80 people on site, working to put in place a wide range of operations ahead of its opening to passengers and freight operators in the coming years.

Earlier this year, the airport revealed numerous new hires to the Air Traffic Services team, as well as investment in its ATC facilities and training equipment.
