Local optometrist shortlisted AGAIN for national Optometrist of the Year award

This marks the fourth time in seven years that Dr Basra has been named as one of the best opticians in the country, and her second consecutive shortlisting, following a nomination in 2024.

The award recognises UK-based optometrists who demonstrate clinical excellence, patient-first thinking, and a commitment to improving both the profession and the communities they serve.

Dr Basra is the co-owner and Consultant Optometrist at Edwards & Walker Opticians, an independent practice based in Doncaster city centre. She has spent over 20 years delivering advanced, compassionate eye care to local patients, with specialist expertise in complex cases.

In 2024, she led a full redesign of the Edwards & Walker practice, creating a purpose-built, patient-focused space aimed at reducing anxiety and improving the overall experience of eye care.

The practice has since been praised for its spa-like environment and intuitive design that helps patients feel more at ease during eye examinations.

Speaking about the latest nomination, Dr Basra said: “Being shortlisted again is a huge honour, but more than anything, it’s a reflection of the team around me and the patients who trust us with their vision every day. Optometry is about so much more than sight tests. It’s about building relationships, supporting wellbeing, and helping people feel confident in their care.”

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Basra champions women in optometry by offering mentorship and leadership development opportunities. Her work has been recognised by a number of national publications, including Optometry Today and Women in Optometry. The winners of the Optometrist of the Year award will be announced later this year at a national ceremony.
