Furniture retailer DFS Group has been recognised for its efforts to reduce environmental impacts and create an ‘Everyone Welcome’ culture by national trade body, the British Furniture Association (BFA).
Headquartered in Doncaster, the UK’s leading furniture retailing group set out its recent milestones and ambitions in environment, social value and governance to secure the BFA’s Future of Furniture Award for Excellence in Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) Reporting.
Presented at the BFA’s Furniture Component Expo, the awards highlight businesses and individuals that are embedding sustainability principles, education and social value.
Over the past two years, DFS Group has strengthened governance, validated science-based net zero targets, and embedded sustainability more deeply across its operations.
Using the ‘Sofa Cycle’ framework as the basis for its environmental strategy, DFS evaluates the impact of each stage in a product’s lifecycle, from raw materials to end-of-life.
Social commitments are underpinned by DFS Group’s ‘Everyone Welcome’ culture, with key initiatives including wellbeing programmes for staff and investment in learning and development, as well as charity partnerships, including £8.1 million raised for BBC Children in Need since 2013.
With a Group ESG Committee, DFS Group has established transparent reporting aligned with recognised frameworks to ensure its ESG priorities are evidence-based and stakeholder-informed.
Kate Wright, Sustainability Director at DFS Group, said: “We believe responsible business is fundamental to long-term value creation.
“Our ESG reporting is designed not only to demonstrate progress, but to transparently share the journey we are on as we transition towards a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient business.”
The Excellence in ESG Reporting Award requires businesses to show evidence of a commitment to continuous improvement in ESG, set out ambitions over the next five years, and outline how it engages with consumers and staff.
Awards were also presented to Whitemeadow (Excellence in Sustainability), ercol (Excellence in Education) and Jacob Lane at Silentnight, who was named Sustainability Champion.
Phil Spademan, MD of the BFA, said: “Our congratulations to DFS Group for an outstanding entry that showcased the hard work they have been doing in ESG reporting.
“This year was an incredibly close competition, with all entrants being at the forefront of best practice in education and sustainability - our panel of independent judges returned some very high scores across all categories.”
“It is important to recognise and celebrate the work that will make our sector more sustainable, create social value, and provide opportunities for the development of people working in our industry.”
