South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has entered into a new strategic partnership with Schroders Capital to support economic, housing and infrastructure growth across the region.

South Yorkshire mayor Oliver Coppard welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), announced during an event at UKREiiF last week.

The new partnership will enable SYMCA and Schroders Capital to explore opportunities to collaborate on key areas to bring forward projects and develop appropriate investment strategies across the South Yorkshire region.

It will initially focus on three areas:

  • Infrastructure – exploring options for projects in areas such as wind, solar and biomass, hydrogen generation and storage and renewable heat
  • Housing – support the development of aspirational and affordable housing, regeneration, social infrastructure and decarbonisation
  • Venture Capital – consider potential investment models that could shape how public and private partners with a common interest could work in a more structured way

South Yorkshire mayor Oliver Coppard said: "South Yorkshire needs a bigger and better economy.

"But we're only going to build that new future by working in partnerships with world-leading companies and investors, creating jobs and opportunity for everyone who lives here. That's why we were at UKREiiF, with our biggest presence yet, to show we're serious; serious, ambitious and open for business.

"And that's why we've signed a strategic partnership with Schroders Capital; because they share our ambitions and our values, and our commitment to good growth."

Paul Myles, director, Schroders Capital, and head of LGPS, added: "We are excited to partner with SYMCA on this strategic initiative. At Schroders Capital, we are dedicated to creating innovative, sustainable solutions that drive economic growth and enhance community well-being.

"This partnership aligns with our commitment to investing in projects that not only deliver financial returns but also foster community development and resilience in regions such as South Yorkshire."
