UK Government calls for Business input on new EU SPS agreement

By Heather Hamilton

The UK Government is inviting businesses to share their views as it prepares for a new Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement with the European Union, designed to support trade in plants, animals and their products.

In May 2025, the UK and EU agreed to form a new strategic partnership covering sanitary and phytosanitary measures. The proposed SPS agreement is expected to reduce costs, cut red tape, and open new export opportunities for UK businesses once it comes into effect in mid‑2027.

The agreement is expected to impact businesses of all sizes, including those that currently trade with the EU as well as those that may be affected indirectly through supply chains.

To ensure businesses are ready to benefit from the agreement, the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has launched a Call for Information, seeking direct input from UK businesses on the support and guidance they will need to prepare.

The Call for Information is now open, your views can be shared here: UK-EU SPS Agreement - Call for Information - About this Call for Information - Defra - Citizen Space

Closes 23 April 2026.
