Building belonging through community at Yorkshire Adoption Agency

Celebrating Black History Month 2025: This October, YAA are proud to launch a month-long, community-led campaign that honours Black heritage, amplifies the voices of Black adopters and adoptees, and promotes inclusive adoption practices.

Why This Matters

Black children continue to wait the longest for adoption in the UK. At YAA, we recognise the systemic barriers that contribute to this disparity—and we’re committed to change. Our campaign, Standing together in Power and in Pride is rooted in collaboration with Black African and Caribbean communities across South Yorkshire.

“Systemic racism erodes trust—and adoption needs trust,” says Sue May, CEO of YAA. “That’s why we’re in this for the long term. We’re listening, learning, and co-developing an approach that works.”

We’re especially proud to be supported by Ray Powell, Chair of our Board of Trustees and the only Black Chair of a Voluntary Adoption Agency in the UK, alongside a dedicated steering group of Black community leaders.

A Year of Listening, A Future of Action

Over the past year, we’ve worked closely with Black-led organisations, churches, and businesses to create safe spaces for honest conversations about adoption, identity, and racial equity. Six months ago, we launched a dedicated community engagement project—and it’s growing.

This October, we’re taking our message further into the community with a series of events, storytelling initiatives, and outreach activities designed to inform, inspire, and connect.

Key Events This October

  • 2 Oct – SACMHA Celebration Event: Launching our partnership with SACMHA and sharing adoption resources.
  • 8 Oct – South Yorkshire Police Conference: Presenting on racial disparities in adoption.
  • YAA Kids Culture Celebration: A joyful internal event with African drumming, storytelling, and crafts.
  • 23 Oct – ChatAdopt: YAA’s Information Session (Virtual): A chance to speak with experienced adopters and learn about the adoption process.
  • 26 Oct – Fraternal of Black Majority Churches Event: Community outreach and engagement.
  • 30 Oct – The Moor, Sheffield: Joining the Halloween fun with games and prizes during half-term.

Amplifying Voices

Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing:

  • Blogs from adopters, adoptees, and staff exploring multicultural adoption and lived experience.
  • Social media stories that highlight modern adoption and the experiences of Black families.
  • Printed materials distributed to churches, barbershops, and community centres—complete with QR codes linking to our community engagement hub.

“This campaign is about honouring heritage, amplifying voices often unheard, and building futures together,” says Skye Curtis-Guilhen, Community In-reach Worker at YAA. “We’re proud to stand firm in power and pride—and to celebrate ALL the families who make adoption a journey of love and resilience.”

Get Involved!

We’re inviting individuals, businesses, and community groups across Doncaster and Sheffield to:

  • Attend our events
  • Share their stories
  • Offer venues or support for outreach

Together, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate future for every child.
