New Masterplan Sets Out Ambitious Vision for the Future of Doncaster City Centre

Building on the progress of the original 2016 Masterplan, which helped to deliver more than 50 regeneration projects across the city centre, including refurbishments to the Wool Market, Corn Exchange, Doncaster Station and the Civic and Cultural Quarter, the new masterplan will help guide further investment, development and decision-making over the coming years.

The plan specifically identifies further development opportunities and aspirations for the city centre, helping to inform future funding bids, investment decisions and partnership working, including the continued development of the Waterfront site, enhancement of the Markets and retail core, investment in green spaces, improved city centre connections and the regeneration of the Waterdale area. Delivery of individual projects will be subject to further development, business cases, funding availability and the necessary approvals.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones said: "Town and city centres across the country continue to face significant challenges due to the continued rise of supermarkets and online shopping, meaning our town and city centres must adapt and overcome this challenge. Significant progress has been made in recent years, but there is lots more to do!

"This refreshed Masterplan sets out an exciting vision for the future of our city centre. It reflects our aspirations for sustainable growth, new investment, quality jobs, city living, cultural opportunities and attractive public spaces. Above all, it demonstrates our confidence in Doncaster's future and our commitment to creating a city centre that everyone can be proud of.

"We want local residents, businesses, stakeholders and investors to help shape that future by exploring the proposals and talking to us about the opportunities ahead."

The refreshed masterplan is driven by the ambition of Doncaster's City Centre Strategy and responds to feedback gathered through the Big City Conversation, which engaged more than 8,000 residents on the topic of the city centre, alongside ongoing work with the private sector-led City Centre Board.

The plan also seeks to strengthen community cohesion by creating welcoming spaces, supporting civic pride and encouraging people from all communities to come together and enjoy the city centre, setting out a vision for a safe, prosperous, inclusive and vibrant city centre.

A summary version of the City Centre Masterplan is now available online and provides an overview of the vision, priorities and opportunity areas that could shape future regeneration activity and investment decisions in the city centre.

To mark the launch, City of Doncaster Council is inviting residents, businesses, community organisations and stakeholders to attend a public drop-in at the Corn Exchange on Thursday 24 September, between 3.30pm and 7.00pm. Further drop-in events will be announced at a later date.

This will provide an opportunity to view the proposals, speak directly with council officers to ask questions and find out more about the future plans for Doncaster city centre.
