A Doncaster-based commercial electrical company owned by an ambitious 31-year-old has taken a major step forward with the purchase of its own premises.
Voltec Electrical and Security, founded by Luke Shaw in 2018 after he took the leap to become self employed, is a commercial and industrial electrical contractor based in Doncaster, operating across the country.
The business provides electrical installation, maintenance and facilities support to commercial and industrial clients within a range of sectors, from schools, factories to restaurants and care homes.
Voltec has grown steadily in recent years on the back of repeat business and long-standing relationships.
As demand increased, Voltec outgrew its rented premises, with stock, equipment and materials putting increasing pressure on day-to-day operations.
Luke began looking for a permanent base that could support the next stage of the company’s development.
“When the opportunity came up to buy a brand-new unit nearby, I knew it was the right move,” said Luke. “We were getting to the point where the office just wasn’t working anymore – it was full of equipment and materials, and we had paperwork surrounded by ducting and wires!
“The new unit, located in Doncaster, provides a collaborative office space for meetings and training to take place, there is a board room table for client meetings and tonnes of additional storage, giving us the room we need to increase organisational capacity and develop with our clients.”
The move was supported by growth funding from Allica Bank, enabling Voltec to secure the new premises while keeping repayments manageable.
“Our new mortgage repayments are actually less than what we were paying in rent, which frees up cash to reinvest in the business and our people,” Luke added. “And as a bonus, we’ve now got something that’s ours, which gives us real security as we look ahead to 2026 and beyond.”
Alongside business growth, Luke has remained focused on developing local talent. Voltec has trained three apprentices into fully qualified electricians, all of whom remain with the business, while two more are currently gaining experience on commercial and industrial projects.
The move is expected to support further job creation locally as the business continues to expand.
Since working with Allica, Luke has also moved Voltec’s day-to-day banking to the challenger bank, which focuses on supporting established SMEs.
“Running a growing business means you need a bank that understands what you’re trying to achieve,” Luke said. “With Allica, everything’s been straightforward. They understand established businesses and having someone like Charlotte on hand, who actually knows our business, has made a real difference.”
Charlotte Corcoran, Voltec’s Relationship Manager at Allica Bank, said: “It’s been really rewarding to work with Luke and see Voltec reach this stage. He’s built a strong local business with a clear focus on his team and customers, and this new space will allow them to take on more aspiring electricians across Doncaster. Supporting established businesses that are growing in the region is what we’re here for.”
Allica is a bank built especially for established businesses with between 5 and 250 employees.
These businesses make up a third of UK employment and turnover, yet they’re overlooked by the big banks with a service that is increasingly impersonal, inconvenient, and poor value.
Allica Bank is on a mission to give established businesses the banking they deserve. That means a current account that rewards business owners for using it, a relationship manager whose name and number they actually know, and powerful tools and technology that make their life easier, not harder.
It’s proving to be a winning combination. Allica was named the UK’s fastest-growing company in The Sunday Times’ Top 100 in 2024 and was awarded the number two spot in its 100 Tech list in 2025.
The firm has also topped Deloitte’s Fast 50 for two consecutive years and was ranked by Sifted as the fastest growing start up in Europe.
