Cabinet set to approve next stage of Mexborough town centre regeneration

Mayor Ros Jones and her cabinet will next week discuss proposals that will see major changes to the York Square area in Mexborough as part of the next stage of regeneration, bringing investment and new life to Mexborough town centre.

Mexborough was awarded over £12.5m of Levelling Up Funding (LUF3) in March 2025, which has since seen works begin to enhance elements of Mexborough including the High Street landscape.

This specific funding will allow work to begin on the retail offer within York Square. As part of the works, the existing market hall will be repurposed and the multistorey car park demolished and replaced with a surface-level car park.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “Since August 2025, a number of regenerative projects have begun in Mexborough town centre, including improving the access to the sports club, improving the overall landscape and improving the shop fronts, this has been made possible through Government funding for Doncaster North.

“This next stage of regeneration which will be discussed by cabinet, will concentrate on improving the Mexborough Markets area, an area that has incredible potential.

“As part of the planned works, the multi-storey car park – which is costly to maintain and often an area of anti-social behaviour – will be demolished and replaced with a surface level car park. Due to the ongoing works taking place around the bus station, this will increase the amount of car parking available at that location. These schemes will enhance the town centre whilst also ensuring sufficient parking spaces to meet existing and future demand.

“We will continue to work alongside the local community, including residents and businesses, to ensure that the full programme of works fit the needs and wants of the community.”

Once approved, the works are expected to be fully complete by summer 2027 – delivering improved accessibility to the Market Hall and an enhanced retail offer developed in York Square, which will look to enhance the high street and early evening economy.

The scheme will add to the ongoing works currently concentrating on:

  • Landscape improvements on the High Street
  • Improvements to Bank Street
  • Improved access to the Athletic Sports Club
  • Improvements to Swinton Road
  • Improvements to Station Road
  • Improvements to Shop Fronts.

Should the latest proposals be approved, the work is expected to start imminently. Mexborough residents can keep up to date on all ongoing works by signing up and downloading the ‎CommUnity for Construction App - App Store on the App Store or via the Google Store here CommUnity for Construction – Apps on Google Play or by looking out on the council social media pages.
