Council consults public over city centre behaviour

Residents, businesses and visitors are being asked for their opinions on powers designed to help make Doncaster’s city centre a safe and attractive place to visit, shop, work and live.

Residents, businesses and visitors are being asked for their opinions on powers designed to help make Doncaster’s city centre a safe and attractive place to visit, shop, work and live.

As the council’s existing Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for the city centre will come to the end of its three-year term in November, a public consultation has started to ask for feedback on whether another PSPO is needed and, if it is, what it could include.

A PSPO is a power for a local authority to deal with particular nuisance or problems in a specific area by imposing restrictions.

In November 2017, the council introduced a new PSPO for the town centre (now city centre) area that contained 10 separate prohibitions addressing various forms of anti-social behaviour. This was renewed in November 2020 as part of a broader package of measures to support people who are homeless and rough sleeping, to improve police and council powers to deal with issues causing concern at that time.

City of Doncaster Council deserves a strong and thriving centre which is easily accessible for all communities. It’s the catalyst for economic growth and jobs and improvements we all can benefit from.

Dan Swaine, Director of Economy and Environment, said: “We want the public to have their say on where they live and the measures in place to tackle behaviours which can negatively affect the city centre.

“We already work with our partners to offer wide ranging support services for vulnerable people with complex lives as well as issues such as homelessness / rough sleeping, drug and alcohol misuse, mental ill-health, anti-social behaviour and begging.

“The existing PSPO was widely supported and something most residents who took part in the consultation said they wanted to see in the city centre. We now would like to hear from as many people as possible and would strongly encourage people to complete our online survey.”

The council is using a predominantly online approach to communicate and seek views given the current situation and people are urged to find out more and complete the short online questionnaire at:
