Hargreaves Land helps to bring new miners’ memorial to Dunscroft

The winding wheel at Hatfield Colliery was safely removed and stored before being used to help create this new memorial.

Hargreaves Land is proud to have played a major role in the creation of a new Miners’ Memorial which is set to be unveiled at Dunscroft in Doncaster later this month.

To honour the miners who worked the coal seams at Hatfield Colliery for nearly 100 years, one half of an original Hatfield Colliery winding wheel has been transported back home to Dunscroft.

After the mine closed in 2015, Hargreaves Land removed the winding wheels from the site and transported them to safe storage at its North East Headquarters in Durham. The company was delighted to be able to donate one of the winding wheels to help create the new memorial.

Clare McRoy, Town Clerk for Hatfield Town Council said, ‘The Council would like to thank Hargreaves for the donation and transportation of a wheel from our local colliery. This is a very important part of the heritage of our local community, members of which have already expressed their appreciation of the planned memorial and are delighted that the wheel has now arrived and been installed. It is currently being painted by local volunteers ahead of the installation of a sculpture later this month.’

Andrew Johnson, head of asset management at Hargreaves Land, said: “The winding wheel at Hatfield was safely removed and stored at our headquarters in Durham in anticipation that it could be required for a special purpose at a later date.

“We were absolutely delighted to be able to help create the Dunscroft Miners’ Memorial. We have a long history of involvement within the local area which continues with the Unity project where we are making excellent progress which will usher in a new phase of growth, but it is important to remember the area’s mining heritage.”
