Doncaster based employers with fewer than 100 staff are being asked to step forward and take advantage of three-month wage payments, via the newly launched Wage Subsidy scheme, in return for offering job roles to young people who are not in employment or training.
Running across South Yorkshire as part of the Pathways to Work agenda, the scheme provides payments in a move designed to create sustainable longer-term employment opportunities for young people aged 16-30 who are not in employment, education or training (NEET) and not mandated to look for work.
By offering time-limited funding towards paid job opportunities with wraparound support, the wage subsidy offer aims to create a bridge to employment, enabling participants to develop practical skills, gain work experience, and build the confidence needed to secure long-term sustainable jobs.
Employers can play a critical role in addressing youth unemployment, not only by offering inclusive and flexible job opportunities, but also by adapting recruitment and workplace practices to accommodate individuals facing complex challenges or barriers. The offer of a wage subsidy is one of the ways employers can access support when recruiting cohorts facing additional barriers; supporting them to transform individual prospects whilst at the same time reducing costs and developing workforce capacity.
Councillor Sue Farmer, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families at City of Doncaster Council: “Too many young people are being left without the skills, experience, and confidence they need to thrive in the workplace. The wage subsidy scheme offers a fantastic opportunity for both local SME employers and young people currently out of the labour market to help address this. It gives employers the chance to see the young person’s true potential, whilst providing the young person with a sustainable job opportunity and personalised wrap-around support from skilled job coaches within the Advance Employment Hub team.”
To be eligible for funding, organisations must have fewer than 100 employees and job opportunities that are expected to last more than six months. A full list of criteria is available on the Advance Employment Hub web page. Employers are encouraged to contact the Advance Employment Team to find out more by emailing: employerhub@doncaster.gov.uk.
