Residents in Thorne will soon be able to access a brand-new gym, bowling alley and children’s play area as part of phase two renovations to Thorne Wellbeing and Leisure Hub.
The hub had been forced to postpone its original opening plan due to electrical connection works, which will be resolved over the next few weeks.
As part of the £8.4m investment into the facility, the wellbeing and leisure hub has seen upgrades to the swimming pool, as well as the installation of a brand-new 40-station gym, wellbeing suite and studio space, six-lane bowling alley, food and drink areas and children’s play area.
Work to the swimming pool, which was part of phase one of the refurbishments, was completed and opened to the public last year.
Cabinet member for City of Doncaster Council, Cllr James Church, said: “I want to thank residents for their patience whilst this exciting regeneration project continues to develop. While construction has progressed well throughout, I can confirm that our project timeline has been impacted by delays to electrical connection works, which fall outside direct control of the project team. These delays have almost been resolved, and we will soon have a timetable for opening which we will be able to share.
“I recently had the delight of visiting the centre – the new facilities look incredible and will be an asset to the town for people of all ages to enjoy; simply put, the wait will absolutely be worth it!”
Michael Hart, chief executive of Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust said: "We were pleased to welcome a team from the City of Doncaster Council to Thorne Wellbeing and Leisure Hub recently to show them the improvements made to the venue.
“We want to see phase two of the refurbishment open to the public as soon as practicable as we want to see the local community accessing this fantastic space.
“Our reopening plan is nearing completion, and once electrical connection is completed, we will then be able to announce the key dates of opening.”
£7.2m of the funding has come from City of Doncaster Council, with the remaining £1.2m coming from Sport England, covering works across the entire site, making a total investment of £8.4m.
The council has committed to investing in leisure facilities across Doncaster, as part of Mayor Ros Jones’ pledge to enable the people of Doncaster to live happier and healthier lives.
Further communication on the wider Doncaster Leisure investment projects, including the opening of Thorne Leisure Centre, will follow throughout the spring and summer.
