Doncaster Sheffield Airport has made significant investments in its Air Traffic Control team and equipment as it continues to prepare for re-opening.
Multiple positions have now been filled in Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Air Traffic Services roles at the airport, including nine trainees who are undergoing practical and theoretical training to complete their Tower and Radar qualifications.
The department, led by Andy Hudson, Head of Air Traffic Services, has also attracted and employed experience staff members from other major airports.
The majority of Trainee Air Traffic Controller positions have been filled by South Yorkshire residents looking for their entry into an aviation career. FlyDoncaster Ltd, which will operate Doncaster Sheffield Airport, is investing in the next generation of ATC professionals amid a UK shortfall caused by national training backlogs and rising retirement rates.
Alongside a growing staff team, the airport has invested and installed the latest high-tech Air Traffic Services technology to safely monitor and direct aircraft. This enables the team to conduct vital training exercises and put in place essential procedures ahead of the re-opening of the airport, which last week moved forward to the next stage of its Airspace Change Process (ACP).
Andy Hudson, Head of Air Traffic Services at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of our newest ATC hires. It's essential we invest in the future of aviation, and I'm pleased we’re able to do this as we re-open Doncaster Sheffield Airport. We will continue to play our part in addressing the national shortage of ATC professionals in the country in the coming years.
“The fact we that have a mix of trainees and experienced staff members means that we have a very strong footing already, and it’s brilliant to see so much excitement, professionalism and knowledge from everybody involved. Safety and compliance are central to everything we do and this preparedness is invaluable as we look forward to building this team further in the coming months and years.
Simon Hinchley, Executive Director – Airport Operations at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, added: “It’s brilliant to have now hired many talented individuals to this critical airport department; and equally that we have invested in local skills as part of our focus on boosting the regional economy."
“The fact that we have installed new technology and refurbished our ATC tower too, making sure we are at the cutting edge of the industry, is also a step forward. This investment and commitment is crucial and we know that it sets the highest of standards as we work to make Doncaster Sheffield Airport operational again.”
Doncaster Sheffield Airport is investing in its team and infrastructure ahead of planned reopening to freight in 2027 and passengers in 2028. This includes a series of improvements to airport infrastructure, and an Airspace Change Process, which is expected to complete in Spring 2027.
